Creative Arts Directors

Joy FrancisJoy Francis is the former editor of PRIDE and PublicSector, which was shortlisted for a Commission for Racial Equality Race in the Media Award 2000. She has written and broadcast widely since 1992 from Community Care, New Nation and The Guardian to Radio 5 Live, GMTV and BBC1’s Watchdog. She is a former script reader for BBC Drama’s Get Writing Programme and the BBC’s New Writing Division. Joy is a visiting lecturer in journalism at the London College of Communications and editor of Diverse Minds Magazine, published by Mind, the national mental health charity. At Words of Colour, Joy leads on journalism and media-related projects and activities.

Paul MaceyPaul Macey has been a journalist for over ten years and has an MA in Journalism from Westminster University. Paul was community affairs editor at The Voice before freelancing for publications such as The Guardian, The Big Issue, Independent, Evening Standard and Local Government Chronicle. Paul Macey is a co-founder director of The Creative Collective, a personal and organisational development consultancy.

Guest Tutors

Ebele Ajogbe is a published poet, performer, storyteller and workshop facilitator. Ebele is founder of The Phenomenal Woman Programme, a series of empowerment workshops that help women and girls explore and interpret their inner/outer worlds through various art forms. She has performed her poetry widely including the Spit-Lit Festival, House of Commons, Glastonbury Festival, Tate Britain and has appeared on BBC Radio 3.

Patsy Antoine is a writer, creative writing tutor and a graduate of the Middlesex University MA in Writing. She commissioned and edited Afrobeat, an anthology of new black British writing, described in The Times as a collection containing ’a wealth of sensitive writing ‘ and was long listed in the 2005 Bridport prize for her short story Jah Goat Finds Liberty. She is currently working on her first novel.

Andrea Enisuoh is a journalist, editor and writer. She is currently an arts columnist for New Nation and coordinator of the Centerprise Literature Development Project. Andrea used to edit the web magazine artvibes.org. Her articles and essays have been published in publications such as PRIDE magazine and the Evening Standard. She is also a pundit on BBC Radio 4’s arts programme Front Row.

Susan Yearwood is a Literary Agent based in London. She has an MPhil in Critical and Creative Writing from Sheffield Hallam University and has taught at Morley College, City Literary Institute and London Metropolitan University. She has won a national prize for short story writing and has been published in various publications over the past 16 years.

Guest Speakers

Selina Julien is assistant editor at NOW magazine, one of the biggest selling celebrity magazines. After graduating from City University with a post graduate diploma in magazine journalism, she freelanced at various publications including the Evening Standard, Looks and Bella magazine, before landing a job as a news reporter at New Nation where she rose to the post of news editor. In 2001, after 18 months, she left New Nation to join NOW magazine as a showbiz writer. She was promoted to news editor then assistant editor, running the showbiz desk.

Laura Smith is a regular contributor to The Guardian, Independent and the Information World Review, an online publishing magazine. A journalist for six years, Laura started her career as a news reporter at the Nottingham Evening Post before moving on to the Evening Standard for three years. Her next journalism post was as a news and business/economics reporter at The Guardian. For the past year she has been a freelance feature writer and has contributed to a new report on Muslims and the media for the Greater London Authority.

Win theatre tickets

The award-winning play Gone too Far by Bola Agbaje will be touring London in July to August. The Royal Court Theatre has kindly given Words of Colour online two pairs of tickets for the two lucky people who can answer the question below. Last month we featured an interview with the lovely Bola about the success of her first ever play Gone too Far. What award did she win for the production and when? Poetry slam competition

Are you a poet with stanzas to share on the theme of identity? Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize

If you are a portrait photographer (amateur or professional) then the Taylor Wessing sponsored award is worth your attention. Submissions are now being invited for this prestigious international photographic portrait competition, which celebrates and promotes the very best in contemporary portrait photography. Entry is open to photographers from around the world, aged 18 and over. This year, the winner of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008 will receive £12,000. In addition the judges, at their discretion, will award one or more cash prizes to the shortlisted photographers. The Prize will also include the special Godfrey Argent Award, presented for the best portrait taken by a photographer aged 18 and 25. For more information visit the website.

Self promotion course for novelists

A new Words of Colour workshop that works with writers to promote themselves effectively whether they are published or unpublished, will be promoted in July and August. The two-day course, which starts in September, will focus on developing your website, writing press releases, engaging the media and securing an agent.
